Some Info on Genetics: Remember back to biology class - studying genetics - we all asked ourselves - "when will we ever use this information?" Well the time is now. If you want to know what your birds might produce, then you need to know what genes they carry. Just a little helpful info for those of you who are visiting and want to know more!

Pied refers to a pattern of color on the bird. A normal gray or cinnamon bird will have full body color and white markings on the edge of the wing feathers. A Pied bird will show either white or yellow colors elsewhere on the body. Check our "Our Flutter Farm Family" page - Cooper is a "heavy" pied, as she is mostly creamy yellow with only the cinnamon body color appearing on her wings. Her pattern is also known as saddleback pied. A bird could also be light pied, where the lighter colors appear on the tummy, back or scattered throughout the body colors.
Split to Pied birds usually show markings on the back of their head - white or yellow - and this visually tells us a bird carries the pied gene that he/she can pass down to the babies. In bird genetics - you need 2 Pied genes to produce a pied baby.

We plan on letting our pairs raise their chicks, but we help by offering hand feedings in the morning and evening to help socialize the babies. By the time the chicks are weaned, they will be hand tame, loving and ready to go to their new homes.
If you are interested in adopting a Flutter Farm baby, please contact us at flutterfarm@aol.com. Once the chicks are 4 weeks old, you can stop by to select your baby, and come back for weekly visits until they are ready to go home with you. This will allow you to develop an early bond with your baby and learn how to care for him. Our parakeet breeder allowed us to visit every week. Each week, our baby looked different - bigger - more feathers - and more personality! That was such an awesome experience for us, we really want to offer this to adoptive parents of our babies.
All chicks come with a Hatch Certificate, a Pedigree, a Care Sheet, and a sample of pellets & seeds they are used to eating.
